Senate of Pennsylvania
Session of 2023 - 2024 Regular Session

MEMORANDUM

Posted: December 6, 2022 03:20 PM
From: Senator Devlin J. Robinson and Sen. Greg Rothman
To: All Senate members
Subject: 250th Anniversary of the United States Navy and Marine Corps

In the near future, we will re-introduce SR164 PN1161 of 2021, which urges the Secretary of the Navy to designate Philadelphia and portions of the Delaware River as the site of the main celebration of the 250th birthdays of the United States Navy and the United States Marine Corps in October and November, 2025.

The history of both branches can be traced back to Philadelphia. On October 13, 1775, the Second Continental Congress passed a resolution to procure two armed vessels in anticipation of conflict with the British Empire, establishing the United States Navy. The Continental Marines was also established by the Second Continental Congress in 1775, on November 10, to augment naval forces in the Revolutionary War and conduct ship-to-ship fighting. Tun Tavern on Water Street in Philadelphia is considered be the birthplace of the Marines.

SR164 was unanimously adopted in the Senate, but it was not considered by the House. Its co-sponsors include: Sens. Bartolotta, Langerholc, Brooks, Tomlinson, Scavello, Gebhard, Santarsiero, Mastriano, Argall, Kane, Fontana, Yudichak, Gordner, Hutchinson, L. Williams, Dush, Comitta, Martin, Costa, J. Ward, Mensch, Phillips-Hill, Cappelletti, Stefano, Vogel, Pittman, Muth, Aument, Schwank, Browne, and Street.

Please join us in supporting this important resolution which must receive consideration in both chambers for adoption. If you have any questions, please contact Sen. Robinson's office at 787-5839. Thank you.
