MEMORANDUM

Subject: Food Allergy Awareness Week in Pennsylvania

In the near future, I will be introducing a resolution recognizing May 12-18, 2024 as Food Allergy Awareness Week in Pennsylvania.

Over the last two decades, food allergies among children have increased over 50%. That's 6 million children (under the age 18) or roughly two children in every classroom. Compared to children who do not have a medical condition, children with food allergies are twice as likely to be bullied.

Emergency medical treatment for severe allergic reactions to food has increased by 377% in only a decade. Each year, an estimated 3.3 million Americans require emergency room treatment for symptoms of a serious allergic reaction to food. This is something I've experienced firsthand when my son had an anaphylactic reaction from the exposure to a cashew.

While immunotherapy offers a promise for treatment, there is currently no cure for allergies.

Please join me in cosponsoring this resolution to bring awareness and advocate for those affected by food allergies in our Commonwealth.
