MEMORANDUM

Posted: February 1, 2024 01:41 PM
From: Representative Marla Brown
To: All House members
Subject: Professional Nurse Grant Program

In an effort to attract more nurses to work in the Commonwealth, I will be introducing legislation that will establish the Professional Nurse Grant Program.

There is no doubt that we have a shortage of nurses in this Commonwealth.  As nursing levels continue to decline in all areas of health care, we need to do more to attract quality nurses for our hospitals, outpatient clinics, physician offices, and other health care entities.

Therefore, my legislation will establish the Professional Nurse Grant Program within the Department of Health.  This program will offer up to $50,000 a year for two years to full-time nurses and up to $25,000 per year for two years to part-time nurses.  These grants must be used for the repayment of existing loans for education directly relating to the applicant meeting the educational requirements to practice as a nurse within this Commonwealth.

While the Commonwealth offers other programs for loan repayment, a grant program specifically for the various types of nurses that are licensed in this Commonwealth is needed to ensure that our health care sector is able to recruit, and retain, high-quality nurses in this Commonwealth.

Please join me in co-sponsoring this important piece of legislation.
