MEMORANDUM

Posted: December 8, 2023 01:07 PM
From: Representative Steven R. Malagari
To: All House members
Subject: Designating March 25, 2024, as “Greek Independence Day” in Pennsylvania

For hundreds of years, Greece was under the rule of the Ottoman Empire. However, on March 25, 1821, Greek rebels began their campaign to gain independence. While Greek rebels successfully wrested control from the Ottomans, the Ottomans did not officially recognize Greek independence until 1832 with the signing of the Treaty of Constantinople.

We owe our democratic form of government to the ancient Athenians. Furthermore, many Americans fought alongside the Greeks in their fight for independence, and Greece has become an important ally to our nation. To honor the Greek fight for independence, I am introducing a resolution designating March 25, 2024, as “Greek Independence Day” in Pennsylvania.

There are approximately 3 million Greek Americans. Furthermore, Greek Americans have played a significant role in the economic, cultural, and social development of this Commonwealth. Please join me in co-sponsoring this resolution to mark this important event in Greek history and celebrate the close ties between the United States and Greece.
