MEMORANDUM

Subject: Co-Sponsorship: Resolution designating March 13, 2024, as "K9 Veterans Awareness and Services Day" in Pennsylvania

Throughout the history of this Commonwealth and the nation, thousands of dogs and their handlers, trainers, and other helpers have served in the military, law enforcement, and various other capacities with honor, dignity, and valor to protect life, liberty, and property.

On March 13, 1942, the official United States K9 Corps was created for service during World War II. In addition, on this day in history, Joseph J. White, a retired military dog handler, established "K9 Veterans Day," an annual day of recognition on March 13 to raise awareness of the important services dogs and their handlers, trainers, and other helpers provide in the military, law enforcement and various other capacities. Military working dogs save and protect our way of life in this Commonwealth and the nation through their roles in the war on terror and other military conflicts not to mention, the service dogs that help people with disabilities and support animals for people with mental health issues.

As many residents of this Commonwealth participate in working dog training and operational activities to protect our lives, our property, and to support our constituents, to commemorate this day in our Commonwealth, I plan on to introduce a Resolution designating March 13, 2024, as "K9 Veterans Awareness and Services Day" in Pennsylvania.

To that end, I encourage you to please join me in co-sponsoring this Resolution. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact Takesha Latham in my Harrisburg Office via email at tlatham@pahouse.net.
