Subject: | Mold Remediation |
Just as classes were set to begin within the Eastern York School District in 2018, mold was discovered in the lower levels of Eastern York Middle School. Though the affected area was immediately isolated, it caused a delay in the start of classes and relegated students to other buildings for weeks due to remediation efforts. This event cannot be allowed to continue on as a regular occurrence, especially not in our schools, where our children deserve to feel safe to learn. To that end, I will be introducing legislation, modeled after a recently introduced bill in the Ohio General Assembly, to require the Secretary of Health to establish an Indoor Mold Program within the Department of Health. This program will assist with educating the general public on mold information and awareness of the dangers that come with its appearance in buildings. As a part of this program, the Secretary will require those that sell, rent, or otherwise transfer ownership of residential, commercial, or industrial property to disclose whether mold is present to the potential buyer, tenant, or occupant. Similarly, this disclosure will also be established for school, state, and municipal buildings. Please join me in co-sponsoring this effort to promote public health and the safety of our future generations. |
