Subject: | Family Medical Leave |
Pennsylvanians should not be forced to choose between limited time with a terminally ill loved one and a job. Currently in PA, workers are unable to take family leave time to care for a terminally ill grandparent, sibling, or grandchild with no living spouse, child over 17 or parent under 65. My legislation, known as the Pennsylvania Family and Medical Leave Act, will provide up to six weeks of unpaid leave for employees of businesses with more than 50 employees. This leave would be in addition to the leave provided by the federal Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA). This legislation was brought to me by a constituent that was forced to leave her job of 17 years to care for her terminally ill sibling with no spouse, children or living parent. The exit from employment had a profoundly negative impact on her financially and also hurt her employer as her years of experience and training walked out the door. I have collaborated closely with the business community on this bill and its Senate companion passed 47-3 late last term before it could be considered in the House. Please join me in supporting PA workers and their families by co-sponsoring the Pennsylvania Family and Medical Leave Act. This legislation was introduced as HB 641 last session.
