Subject: | Bridge Naming -- Sgt. Edward L. Shannon Memorial Highway |
In the near future, I will be introducing legislation designating a portion of Johnson Mill Road (SR 1001) from the bridge over Buffalo Creek to the intersection of Colonel John Kelly Road in Buffalo Township, Union County, as the Sgt. Edward L. Shannon Memorial Highway. Sergeant Shannon enlisted in the Army in 1914 and first served in combat in the Mexican Border War in 1917. After his success at the southern border, he deployed to Europe in May of 1918 to fight against the Central Powers in World War I. He was killed in action in the Argonne Forest in France on September 26, 1918, after months of intense battle. His command would go on to be successful against the German offensive just less than a month later. Corporal Newton E. Baker, a fellow soldier and friend of Sergeant Shannon’s, wrote the following in 1918: “He was in charge of his section at the time (of his death). He met his fate like a man, like a soldier, like an American. Higher praise can not [sic] be given to this man and he deserves every word of it.” He is buried in Immanuel United Methodist Cemetery in Mazeppa, Pennsylvania. Please join me in supporting this legislation in his memory. |
