MEMORANDUM

Posted: September 15, 2021 12:02 PM
From: Representative Curtis G. Sonney
To: All House members
Subject: Light Weight Recreational Trailer Registration

In the near future, I will be introducing legislation to relieve seniors of the $5 additional vehicle registration fee on small trailers. As you may recall, Act 89 created the “Fee for Local Use Fund” and authorized counties, through the adoption of a local ordinance, to impose an additional $5 registration fee on all vehicles registered within their respective counties. The revenue collected through the additional fee is then allocated to the counties to be used for road and bridge purposes.

It is important to note that, if a county imposes the $5 additional fee, the fee also applies to registered trailers within the county, which is unfair to our senior residents who must pay this additional fee for each of their motor vehicles in addition to any smaller utility trailers they may have. To provide some financial relief to our seniors, my legislation will simply exempt from this fee trailers with a gross weight of 3,000 pounds or less that are registered to an individual 65 years of age or older.

I hope you will join me in cosponsoring this legislation.
