Subject: | Parental Notification of Students Involved in School Incidents |
Currently, schools are not required to notify parents when their children are involved in incidents on school property, such as incurring serious injuries, as well as being the victim or the perpetrator of an injury. This leaves parents unaware of their children’s safety while they are away from them for nearly eight hours a day. We plan to introduce legislation that would require all school districts to adopt policies and procedures for timely notification to parents, guardians or custodial parents of students involved in incidents that occur on school property. Furthermore, schools would be required to provide notice when students sustain serious injuries or students inflict serious injuries on another student while on school property, on the school bus or at a school activity. Parents entrust their children into the care of the school officials. Therefore, school entities should be held responsible in notifying parents when their children are involved in an incident at school. Moreover, parents have the right to be made aware of their children’s well-being. It is essential that we ensure parents are notified of their children’s involvement in school incidents. We hope you will join us in supporting this important legislation. |
