| Subject: | Smoke Detector Inspections and Penalties |
| In the near future, I plan to introduce a bill that would require the Department of Human Services to include the inspection of all smoke detectors in their annual inspection of child care facilities. In addition, the smoke detectors shall be interconnected so that if one is triggered, they all go off. The locations where the smoke detectors are installed will need to meet current code and follow it as it changes. All battery powered smoke detectors must be equipped with the 10 year lithium powered batteries. Lastly, if a smoke detector is found to have been tampered with or disabled, the child care facility will face a penalty. On Sunday, August 11, 2019, an early-morning fire at a daycare in Erie, PA, claimed the lives of five young children. This fire may not have been so deadly had the home been equipped with more smoke detectors. Only one smoke detector was found in the home and it was located in the attic. Deaths caused by fire can be prevented with the use of properly installed and managed smoke detectors. It is our responsibility to put the laws in place to try to avoid such tragedies as the one that recently occurred in my district.
