Subject: | Recognizing Bishop Nelson Perez |
This January, Bishop Nelson Perez was named archbishop of Philadelphia, making him the first Latino to head the archdiocese of more than 1.3 million Catholics. Bishop Perez’s national leadership among Latino Catholics and his rich roots in the Catholic Church of Philadelphia has led him to one of the most important positions in the Roman Catholic Church in the United States. The son of Cuban immigrants, Bishop Perez was born in Miami, Florida, and raised in West New York, New Jersey. After attending the diocesan seminary in Philadelphia in 1988 and 1989, his first role in priesthood landed him as parochial vicar of Saint Ambrose Parish in Olney. Over the decades of his service, Perez has remained a great influence and encourager of generations of Americans, becoming the first Latino to hold the position of auxiliary bishop in the Diocese of Rockville Centre. This new appointment of Archbishop of Philadelphia marks another historic achievement for Bishop Perez and the Latino Catholic community. I hope you will join me in supporting this resolution in honor of Bishop Perez’s service and in celebration of his new appointment as archbishop of Philadelphia. |
