Subject: Mental Health Awareness in the Black Community Month

Mental health is a vital part of one’s overall wellbeing, but unfortunately there are many barriers today preventing open discussions about mental health awareness and policy reforms. Due to the racial inequality present in the United States, African American communities face even larger obstacles. African Americans are disproportionately affected by serious mental health issues and only one out of every three African Americans who need mental health care receives it.

Our resolution would designate May 2019 as “Mental Health Awareness in the Black Community Month” in Pennsylvania to draw awareness to the need to eliminate mental health disparities based on race, ethnicity, education, or income. Pennsylvania as a whole will benefit alongside the black community as access to mental health care is expanded.

The well-being of the black community deserves our attention and advocacy. Please join us in dedicating May 2019 to this cause.
