Subject: | Capital Punishment: Non-Unanimous Jury Verdicts |
In February 2013, a Wayne County inmate convicted of trafficking 33 pounds of cocaine and gang-related murder stabbed Corrections Officer Eric Williams more than 200 times and fractured his skull. A lone juror in the resulting trial prevented this criminal from receiving the only acceptable punishment for such a heinous act: the death penalty. For this reason, my legislation will permit the death penalty for an 11-1 jury verdict in cases where the victim was a public servant killed in the performance of his or her duties. Please join me in co-sponsoring this important legislation to send a message to all criminals who may consider harming a public servant: heinous violence will always be met with justice in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. |
