Subject: | Recognizing January 2018 as “National Blood Donor Month” |
In the near future, I will be introducing a resolution recognizing January 2018 as “National Blood Donor Month” in Pennsylvania. “National Blood Donor Month” has been recognized every January since 1970 to acknowledge the life-saving role of blood donors. “National Blood Donor Month” is celebrated during January in an effort to increase blood donations because winter is traditionally one of the most difficult times of the year to collect enough blood to meet patient needs. This is due to several factors, including seasonal illnesses that cause some donors to become temporarily unable to donate and inclement weather which often results in canceled blood drives. Additionally, dangerous road conditions brought by winter weather can result in an increase in traumatic injuries, which may lead to an increase in the need for blood from blood banks. Donating blood is a safe and simple process that millions of Americans are able to do, yet less than 10% of the eligible population actually donates each year. Just one pint of donated blood can help save as many as three people’s lives. Please join me in co-sponsoring this resolution in an effort to acknowledge the crucial role of blood donors and increase blood donations during this winter season. |
