Subject: | Exempt individual firefighters from paying sales tax on personal purchases of firefighter equipment |
When we return to Session in January, I intend to introduce legislation that would exempt individual firefighters from paying sales tax on personal purchases of firefighter equipment. Under Section 204 of the Tax Reform Code, fire departments are exempt from paying sales tax on purchases made for the department. Firefighters routinely buy their own helmets, suits, etc., for their jobs, but they are not exempt. I believe it is simply wrong for the state to require the brave men and women who put their lives on the line to protect and serve the residents of Pennsylvania every day to pay sales tax on equipment needed to serve their communities. This legislation was introduced in the 2013-14 session by former Rep. Gary Haluska as House Bill 574.
