MEMORANDUM

Subject: “National Guard Day” in Pennsylvania Resolution

Please join me in co-sponsoring a resolution designating April 9, 2014 as “National Guard Day” in Pennsylvania.

The resolution commemorates the 259th anniversary of our Commonwealth’s first militia laws and honors Guard members for their unselfish contributions to their dual mission of national security and emergency preparedness and response.

Pennsylvania’s 19,000-member National Guard is one of the largest and most deployed forces in the nation, and the only National Guard to host a Stryker Brigade, built around one of the industry’s most powerful armored vehicles.

Dating back to 1755, our nation’s volunteer militia has evolved into today’s modern, professional National Guard. These citizen-soldiers have taken part in every major U.S. military conflict since the Revolutionary War, and have been a vital part of peacekeeping missions, flood response and recovery, and many other domestic and international operations. Since September 11, 2001, more than 17,000 of our soldiers and airmen have deployed in support of the global contingencies, with many serving multiple deployments.

Thank you for your support of this resolution and our Guardsmen and women.
