Senate of Pennsylvania
Session of 2013 - 2014 Regular Session

MEMORANDUM

Posted: January 16, 2014 02:03 PM
From: Senator James R. Brewster
To: All Senate members
Subject: Congenital Heart Defects Resolution

In the near future, I will introduce a resolution recognizing February 7 through 14, 2014, as Congenital Heart Defects week in Pennsylvania.”

I was asked by a constituent to recognize this week in honor of her son, Gregory Guzzo who was born a congenital heart defect, or CHD.

Gregory had open heart surgery in December 2013 for Atrioventricular Septal Defect, which accounts for about 5 percent of all congenital heart defects.

Congenital Heart Defects are the most common type of birth defect in the United States, with approximately 40,000 babies in the U.S. born with CHD every year.

Once identified, babies born with CHD can receive treatment that can prevent death or disability. Pulse oximetry screenings can identify newborns before they show signs of the condition.

Death rates for CHD have declined by almost 30 percent due to advances made through research.

Thank you for your consideration.
