MEMORANDUM

Posted: June 4, 2013 06:23 PM
From: Senator Timothy J. Solobay
To: All Senate members
Subject: Restless Legs Syndrome Awareness Day

In the near future, I will be introducing a resolution to raise awareness for a disease affecting 10 million adults in the United States - Restless Legs Syndrome or RLS. My resolution would declare September 23, 2013, as Restless Legs Syndrome Awareness Day.

RLS is a neurological disorder most recognized by an uncontrollable urge to move the legs to alleviate uncomfortable and painful sensations in the legs during rest or inactivity. Patients describe their symptoms as “ants” in the veins or a feeling like their legs are packed in concrete. These symptoms often impact a patient’s ability to sleep and simply be in a state of rest. The disease, which is largely underdiagnosed, does not discriminate against age, sex or race, but occurs most often in middle-aged or older adults and can be hereditary.

While there is no cure for RLS, groups like the Willis-Ekbom Disease Foundation are working to raise awareness among patients, health care professionals, and the general public about the symptoms and treatment options available, so that patients may not only be properly diagnosed, but through research, a cure may eventually be found.

Please join me in recognizing RLS and encouraging awareness of this disease to aid in more effective diagnosis, treatment, and hopefully a cure.
