House of Representatives
Session of 2013 - 2014 Regular Session

MEMORANDUM

Posted: January 14, 2013 02:23 PM
From: Representative Richard R. Stevenson
To: All House members
Subject: Former House Bill 1324 - Small Estates

In the near future, I will reintroduce legislation to amend Title 20 of the Pennsylvania Consolidated Statutes, the portion of our statutory law dealing with wills, trusts, and estates, in order to raise the dollar limit in the case of small estates. Small estates are ones which can be settled without a formal accounting. House Bill 1324 passed the House last session on October 18, 2011, by a vote of 198-0.

Currently, the limit for small estates is $25,000. This amount was last set by the General Assembly in 1994. The previous limit was $10,000, a dollar amount set by the General Assembly in 1974. I believe it is time once again to raise the limit.
