Subject: | Reporting U6 Unemployment Statistics |
Soon, I will be introducing legislation that would require the Department of Labor and Industry to include certain data in their annual report about Pennsylvania Unemployment Compensation Program to the Governor and the General Assembly and make that report available on their website. Currently, there is not any language that specifies the types of statistics that the Department of Labor and Industry must include in their report. Because of this, the Department of Labor and Industry only includes data for those who are unemployed and actively seeking employment. This piece of legislation would require that they include specific measures that consider additional groups of people, such as those who are able to work but not looking for a job. The requirement of these measures should not cause any undue burden on the Department because the Department already has these figures. They’ve included them in their “PA Monthly Workstats” publication. Requiring these statistics in the official annual report will allow us to see how they change year over year. My legislation will also define these measures to ensure that they are calculated in line with federal standards. Please see the federal explanation and definition of these figures as they are outlined here https://www.bls.gov/lau/stalt.htm . Please join me in sponsoring this legislation to hold these reports to a definitive data standard and increase the amount of data available to legislators and the public. |
