MEMORANDUM

Subject: Recognizing International Dark Skies Week in PA

I will be introducing a resolution recognizing April 2, 2024, through April 8, 2024, as International Dark Sky Week in Pennsylvania.

Excessive light production has been shown to adversely impact human health, disrupt wildlife, increase energy costs, and obstruct our view of the night sky. In addition, the glare from too much lighting can negatively impact safety by decreasing visibility for motorists, cyclists, and pedestrians.

The U.S. Department of Energy reported that over $3 billion in energy is lost to skyglow, which occurs when lighting is not properly directed toward the ground. According to the International Dark-Sky Association, 83% of the global population lives under a light-polluted sky.

When it comes to protecting our environment, improving public health, and cutting energy waste, limiting light pollution is low-hanging fruit. And there are simple steps we can all take to do our part. For example, outdoor lighting can be shielded and directed where necessary. Lights can also be controlled by timers or sensors to ensure they are only on when needed.

I hope this resolution helps remind us of the importance of protecting and safeguarding the night sky as a natural treasure and an innate part of life on our planet.

Please consider joining me in co-sponsoring this resolution.
