MEMORANDUM

Posted: February 7, 2024 11:55 AM
From: Senator Carolyn T. Comitta
To: All Senate members
Subject: Designate March as Art, Music, Theatre and Dance In Our Schools Month

Music, Art, Theatre, and Dance are much more than hobbies – they offer a healthy and productive outlet for self-expression, a way we can connect with each other, and a path to developing a deeper understanding of the world around us.

Numerous studies illustrate just how important Art, Music, Theatre, and Dance programs in our schools are to the healthy growth, education, and development of our young people. From raising test scores to improving student behavior to building teamwork, problem-solving, and critical-thinking skills, such programs are critical to student success in school, work, and life.

Meanwhile, we are only on the cusp of that we are only on the cusp of fully understanding the therapeutic benefits of music and the arts when it comes to mental health and wellness. Engagement in arts education has also been shown to have a positive impact on encouraging student creativity and imagination, boosting self-confidence, and developing compassion and empathy for others.

Despite their immense and immeasurable contributions to our schools, students, and communities, music and art education programs continue to face challenges. That’s why this year, I am again introducing a resolution designating March 2024 as “Music in Our Schools Month,” “Theatre in Our Schools Month,” “Dance in Our Schools Month,” and “Youth Art Month” in Pennsylvania.

I hope you will join me in co-sponsoring this important resolution, raising awareness of the importance of Music, Art, Theatre, and Dance education for all children and reminding us that quality arts and educational experiences are vital to students, families, and communities.
