Subject: | Securing Gun Inventories |
In the near future, I will be offering legislation that will require commercial firearms dealers and or gun stores located in a city of the first class to store and secure all firearms and ammunition inventory overnight in a locked safe. It was reported in the Philadelphia Inquirer that a gun store located in Montgomery County, PA was targeted by five (5) thieves who made off with numerous handguns during a Saturday burglary. According to the investigating ATF Special Agent, the group forced their way through the store’s front door and were recorded on surveillance leaving the scene. Normally, when securing valuables or dangerous items you would expect that those items would be stored and secured overnight in a locked safe. We do it with money, we also do it with jewelry. Having this important second layer of security not only protects the owner’s valuable inventory but protects the public from those who seek to obtain firearms and ammunition illegally. In light of the current levels of gun violence in the City of Philadelphia, requiring commercial firearms dealers and gun stores in first class cities to lock up their guns and ammunition overnight is more than reasonable since they have a duty to keep the public safe. I hope that you will join me as a co-sponsor of this very important legislation. |
