Subject: | Violence Reduction at Youth Sporting Events |
I plan to introduce legislation that would prohibit the possession of firearms at recreational centers and youth sporting events. Our commonwealth has a problem that we, as lawmakers, have not yet been able to solve. The improper use of firearms at locations where our young people congregate has led to countless shootings and the loss of many lives. We have seen a growing number of gun-related incidents occurring at youth sporting events in recent years. In addition to actual shootings, we are hearing more and more about the threats towards parents, coaches, officials, and children. I have watched spectators thoughtlessly brandish their weapons to threaten other spectators or harass referees over unfavorable calls. Kids deserve to feel safe when they are at play. A safe environment is essential for the physical and mental development of athletes. Sports facilities affiliated with k-12 schools are currently protected as gun-free zones in Pennsylvania. However, we have no protections for families and minors at non-school affiliated sporting events. My bill would allow law enforcement to take reasonable action to protect a site and the immediate area with a firearm prohibition. It is vitally important we take a stand to protect our children. We cannot pass the blame when we have the ability to make changes that could save lives. I ask that you consider cosponsoring this legislation and work with me to improve upon this concept as we need to take action to prevent senseless violence. Please join me in co-sponsoring this legislation. |
