Subject: | Amending the unemployment compensation law to allow victims of domestic or sexual violence to be eligible for benefits |
In the near future, I plan to introduce legislation amending the unemployment compensation law to allow an individual who as a result of domestic or sexual violence has to voluntarily leave their job to protect their safety to be eligible for unemployment compensation. This is part of the Senate Democratic Caucus package to combat domestic violence in the Commonwealth which was developed with input from the Pennsylvania Coalition Against Domestic Violence. Domestic violence continues to plague our communities. Last year, the 60 community centers providing services throughout the Commonwealth assisted more than 89,000 victims of domestic violence. This bill would allow an individual, who leaves their job voluntarily due to domestic or sexual violence, to be eligible for unemployment compensation if the individual believes that remaining in their current job would jeopardize their safety. This bill is similar to House Bill 482. I hope that you will join me in sponsoring this legislation. |
