Subject: | Designating March 15-21 as Poison Prevention Week |
When we reconvene next week, I plan to introduce a resolution designating March 15-21 as Poison Prevention Week in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. The first purpose of this resolution is to raise awareness of accidental poisoning. It notes that 94% of accidental poisonings occur in the home, and that young children are frequent victims of this preventable public health hazard. By educating parents and recommending simple precautions, we can help prevent the many tragedies caused by household chemicals, pharmaceuticals, and even plants. The second purpose of this resolution is to recognize the important work done by Poison Control Centers. Reachable 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, these centers provide vital information to callers seeking help for poison exposures, reassuring worried caretakers and minimizing trips to emergency services. I hope you will join me in sponsoring this resolution. |
