Senate of Pennsylvania
Session of 2015 - 2016 Regular Session

MEMORANDUM

Posted: February 24, 2015 07:55 AM
From: Senator David G. Argall and Sen. Richard L. Alloway, II
To: All Senate members
Subject: Defining ophthalmic surgery

In the near future, we will introduce legislation that will amend the Medical Practice Act of 1985 to define ophthalmic surgery.

Currently, no definition exists in Pennsylvania law. This legislation will ensure that individuals who are not licensed, trained or educated in surgery of the eye are prohibited from performing ophthalmologic surgical procedures.

Pennsylvania law is clear, only a physician can perform eye surgery; however, what is not clear is what exactly eye (ophthalmic) surgery is. The definition we plan to introduce was developed by ophthalmic surgeons and will clearly define the practice of ophthalmic surgery. We believe this legislation is critical to the safety of those individuals who will undergo ophthalmic surgery in Pennsylvania.

Introduced as SB795
