| Subject: | Memo #9 - Legal Notice Advertising Modernization |
| In the near future, I plan to introduce legislation that would amend Title 45 (Legal Notices) to allow a government agency that is required to publish legal notices in newspapers, the option to publish the notice on their own official government website or in a community paper of mass dissemination. Current law requires that certain legal advertisements must be published in newspapers of general circulation and as a result state and local governments are forced to spend a significant amount of money on newspaper advertisements. However, there are other vehicles that are more cost effective and reach a wider audience. Allowing government agency’s the option to post to their own official government website or a community paper would significantly reduce advertising costs, provide for a more efficient dissemination of this information and provide for a larger circulation. In Pennsylvania, it is estimated that the requirements for newspaper advertising cost local governments as much as $26 million annually. Allowing government agencies to choose a cheaper alternative brings relief to taxpayers and frees up funding for other critical programs. I invite you to join me in cosponsoring this legislation.
