Subject: | Co-sponsor memo #25 – Uniform Firearms Act – Universal Background Checks |
In the near future, I will be introducing companion legislation to HB 1010 (Santarsiero), which amends the Uniform Firearms Act to require the completion of a background check for all gun sales or transfers. This bill is a modified version of SB 665 of last session. Currently, the Crimes Code requires firearm sales be conducted in front of a licensed importer, manufacturer, dealer, or county sheriff. However, this provision is only applicable to short-barreled firearms. This legislation would remove this applicability provision and require all firearm sales, regardless of the barrel length, be conducted in front of a licensed importer, manufacturer, dealer, or county sheriff. Ultimately, this legislation would require background checks be conducted for each firearm purchase, which will ensure that individuals attempting to obtain a firearm are authorized to possess such weapons. Please join me in sponsoring this important piece of legislation. If you have any questions, please contact my Chief Counsel, Mark Mekilo, at 7-7112 or mmekilo@pasenate.com. |
