Subject: | Gettysburg Week |
In the near future, I plan to introduce a Resolution designating the week of July 1st as “Gettysburg Week.” As you are aware, the Battle of Gettysburg, fought from July 1-4, 1863, is considered the most important engagement of the American Civil War as it was the turning point for the North. On November 19, 1863, President Abraham Lincoln delivered the Gettysburg Address at the dedication of the Soldiers' National Cemetery. And in 1895, the Gettysburg battlefield was designated as a National Military Park. Each year, more than 1,000,000 people travel to visit the Gettysburg National Park, Museum, and Visitors center. As we approach the 161st Anniversary of the Battle of Gettysburg, please join me in cosponsoring this Resolution commemorating the Battle of Gettysburg – recognizing the significance of this battle in the history of the United States – and encouraging citizens to visit historic Gettysburg. |
