Senate of Pennsylvania
Session of 2013 - 2014 Regular Session

MEMORANDUM

Posted: April 17, 2024 01:27 PM
From: Senator Scott Martin and Sen. Cris Dush, Sen. Wayne Langerholc, Jr.
To: All Senate members
Subject: Honoring Pennsylvania’s 2024 NCAA National Wrestling Champions, All-Americans and the Pennsylvania State University’s Team Championship

In the near future, Senators Dush, Langerholc and I will introduce a resolution to recognize the Pennsylvania State University’s (PSU) Wrestling Team for earning its 12th NCAA Team Title, and to honor the wrestlers’ individual titles and All-American honors, as well as the achievements of several Pennsylvania natives who competed, saw their own successes and made their hometown communities proud.

PSU Wrestling broke several records this year, including the highest team score ever achieved, the largest point differential ever set between the Championship Team and second place, and for the first time in NCAA wrestling history, the Nittany Lions featured two four-time national champions on their roster. By doing so, wrestlers Carter Starocci (Erie) and Aaron Brooks joined an elite group of only five other wrestlers in history to win four times – a group that includes their very own coach, Cael Sanderson. Aaron Brooks would later be named the recipient of the prestigious 2024 Dan Hodge Trophy.

Under the outstanding coaching of Sanderson and his staff, PSU earned their 11th Team title over the span of 13 championship tournaments. The team also had a record six individuals competing for first place in the finals and tied their previous school record of having eight All-Americans in a single season. The other top finishers from the team included: Beau Bartlett (Kingston, Second Place), Tyler Kasak (Doylestown, Third Place), Levi Haines (Arendtsville, First Place), Mitchell Mesenbrink (Second Place), Bernie Truax (Fifth Place) and Greg Kerkvliet (First Place).

Pennsylvania’s representation at the tournament continued the Commonwealth’s long and rich history as a perennial powerhouse in the sport of wrestling. Our resolution will highlight each of the other Pennsylvania native athletes who placed in the top three of their weight classes. These include: Ryan Crookham (Hellertown, Third Place), Rocco Welsh (Waynesburg, Second Place) and Trent Hidlay (Lewistown, Second Place).

These young men have continued to set a high standard of excellence, and more importantly, set an incredible example to younger athletes in communities across our Commonwealth. Please join us in congratulating them on their outstanding efforts on the mat.
