MEMORANDUM

Posted: April 12, 2024 10:35 AM
From: Senator Cris Dush
To: All Senate members
Subject: Cash Entry for school-sponsored activities

In the near future, I plan to introduce a bill that will require schools to accept cash as payment for entry into school-sponsored activities.

This bill is a companion piece to Representative Moul’s HB2176.

Some schools in the commonwealth have begun to refuse to accept cash as a form of payment into school-sponsored events like sporting events and plays. Some schools are even beginning to only offer ticket sales online or through an app.

While the option to go cashless may make it easier for some, for the elderly, it can make things much more difficult. If an elderly person without a smartphone wants to go watch a grandchild or other loved one at an event, they will be unable to enter an event that requires an app to purchase a ticket.

Schools will still be able to offer a cashless option under this bill, they will just be required to accept legal united states tender as a form of payment and will not be allowed to turn someone away because that person only knows how to pay with cash.

Please join me in cosponsoring this important legislation.
