Subject: | National Falls Prevention Awareness Day - September 23rd |
I will soon be introducing a resolution recognizing September 23, 2014, as “National Falls Prevention Awareness Day” in Pennsylvania. Falls are the leading cause of injury-related deaths among people over the age of 65, and an older Pennsylvanian is hospitalized due to a fall-related injury every 10 minutes. Falling is not an inevitable result of aging. Studies show that through a combination of falls prevention strategies, evidence-based interventions, practical lifestyle adjustments, and community partnerships, we can significantly reduce falls among older adults, helping them remain healthy, independent and self-sufficient. This resolution is similar to SR 345 of the 2011-12 Legislative Session. Please join me in promoting and increasing public awareness about reducing and preventing falls among the older adult population and encouraging Pennsylvanians to take steps to protect those who are at increased risk of falling. If you have any questions, please contact Nate Silcox of my staff at 717-787-6538 or nsilcox@pasen.gov RV/ns |
