Subject: Condolence Resolution-Dr. Maya Angelou

In the near future, I plan on introducing a condolence resolution acknowledging the life of Dr. Maya Angelou, who passed away on May 28, 2014. Dr. Angelou was a great poet and humanitarian who used her talents to advocate for social equality. Dr. Angelou was a woman of accomplishments filled with many first. She was the first African-American woman nominated for a Pulitzer Prize and the first African-American female street car conductor in San Francisco. She received numerous accolades and awards including the Presidential Medal of Arts, the Lincoln Medal, and the Presidential Medal of Freedom. She was also inducted into Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc as an Honorary Member, which is the sorority’s highest honor. In 1993, Dr. Angelou, composed and recited her poem “On the Pulse of the Morning” for President Clinton’s inauguration. Dr. Angelou served as Reynolds Professor of American Studies at Wake Forest University for over 30 years. Dr. Maya Angelou graced the world with her wisdom through her literary works. I invite you to join me in cosponsoring this condolence resolution as we acknowledge her life and celebrate her legacy.
Thank you for your consideration.
