Senate of Pennsylvania
Session of 2013 - 2014 Regular Session

MEMORANDUM

Posted: March 10, 2014 02:34 PM
From: Senator Joseph B. Scarnati, III
To: All Senate members
Subject: Pitt Day 2014

In the near future, I plan to introduce a Senate Resolution declaring March 18, 2014, as “Pitt Day” in Pennsylvania and honoring outgoing Chancellor Mark Nordenberg.

This year, the University of Pittsburgh’s Pitt in Harrisburg Day will take place on March 18th at the State Capitol. This annual event provides the General Assembly an opportunity to speak with alumni, faculty and students about their work and to gain a first-hand perspective of the issues facing public higher education. This is the 18th year that the event will take place.

The resolution will highlight the accomplishments of the University of Pittsburgh, and also recognize the hard work and achievements of Chancellor Mark Nordenberg, who will retire in August 2014.

Chancellor Nordenberg began his career at Pitt in 1977 when he was hired as a visiting contract instructor at the University’s law school. He later became the dean of the law school, then served as interim provost and senior vice chancellor before being elected interim chancellor by the Board of Trustees in 1995. The following year he was named chancellor.

Throughout his 19 years as chancellor, Mark Nordenberg has provided strong leadership and guidance to help Pitt become one of the country’s leading institutions of higher education. In addition to his role at the University, Chancellor Nordenberg has also been extensively involved within the Western Pennsylvania community, serving on numerous Boards and engaging in a wide range of civic activities.

Under Chancellor Nordenberg’s tenure, Pitt has attracted approximately $9 billion in sponsored research support to the region. Pitt is also one of Western Pennsylvania’s largest employers, employing more than 13,300 people on its five campuses. Each year Pitt spends more than $1.74 billion in the community.

Please join me in co-sponsoring this resolution to recognize Chancellor Nordenberg and this world-class learning and research institution.
