Subject: | Website Witness and Victim Protection Act |
In the near future I will be introducing the Website Witness and Victim Protection Act, based off of my previous Senate Bill 121 from the 2011 – 2012 legislative session. This legislation will make it a crime for a person to publish on the Internet the identity of a witness or victim in a criminal investigation with the intent to obstruct justice or intimidate that witness or victim. A violation of this act will be a second-degree felony in the Commonwealth. This legislation is in response to the growing practice of various websites publishing the names and/or identities of individuals who have been witnesses or victims in criminal cases. Publication of such information has been an apparent attempt to intimidate future witnesses or victims from testifying or to encourage retaliation against past witnesses or victims and their families. Previous co-sponsors of this legislation include Senators Tartaglione, Fontana, Browne, Rafferty, Alloway, M. White, and Leach. If you wish to co-sponsor this legislation, please contact my office at (717) 787-5970. |
