MEMORANDUM

Posted: September 22, 2023 01:19 PM
From: Representative Nancy Guenst
To: All House members
Subject: Creating the Woman Veteran License Plate

Our country’s history is filled with remarkable women who answered the call to serve in armed conflicts when America’s needs were great. Although there were instances of women serving in the military in every U.S. war, it was not until World War I when policy allowed them to serve in non-combat jobs to free up men to fight.  In 1948, President Harry Truman signed the Women’s Armed Services Integration Act, officially allowing women to serve as full, permanent members of all branches of the Armed Forces.

Today, more than 250,000 women service members are stationed throughout the world, and they continue to break barriers in the military. Women are flying combat missions, commanding troops, graduating from infantry officer courses, attending Ranger School, and so much more. The United States would not be the greatest military force on the planet without the tremendous contributions of women in uniform.

To recognize the extraordinary service and sacrifice of women in the military, I plan to introduce legislation creating the Woman Veteran License Plate. This plate will give the nearly 66,000 women veterans in Pennsylvania the option to proudly display their service on their passenger vehicle or motorcycle.

As a fellow woman veteran of the United States Army, I am proud to stand alongside every woman who served before me and alongside every woman who will serve after me. Please join me in co-sponsoring this important legislation to honor these tremendous women.
