MEMORANDUM

Posted: April 27, 2023 02:48 PM
From: Representative Johanny Cepeda-Freytiz
To: All House members
Subject: School Meal Quality and Quantity Study

I have received concerns from parents about their children’s cafeteria food being served with mold and appearing rotten, along with portions that are not enough for them to feel full. This is unacceptable, as some students may depend on these meals to help them focus and get them through the school day. A quality education and safe school environment need to include healthy and secure breakfasts and lunches for every student.

Despite federal law and state inspections, some school districts may struggle with serving the healthy and proportional meals that impact students’ well-being. This is why I will be introducing a resolution to urge the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture and the Pennsylvania Department of Education to work together to conduct a statewide study of cafeteria services in every school district and set nutritional and quantity standards for school breakfasts and lunches. The departments would also be tasked with making recommendations about legislative action the General Assembly can take to better support our schools to provide quality meals to students.

It is our responsibility to ensure that all students have access to an equitable education despite their zip code, and that includes having equitable and healthy school meals. Please join me in co-sponsoring this legislation to help Pennsylvania children receive the healthy food they need to focus in class and improve academic performance.
