Session of 2023 - 2024 Regular Session

MEMORANDUM

Posted: January 18, 2023 04:33 PM
From: Representative Nick Pisciottano
To: All House members
Subject: Removal of Vehicle Doors on Public Roads

There are several legal, procedural, and insurance mechanisms in place to ensure that owners of Jeep Wranglers and similar vehicles are safe and responsible when operating their vehicles with the doors removed. To manufacture vehicles with removable doors, Jeep obtains safety approval from the National Highway Safety Administration.

With these precautions already in place, drivers who wish to operate such vehicles without doors on public roadways should be permitted to do so under certain circumstances, but operating a vehicle without doors on the road is currently illegal in Pennsylvania. My legislation would allow this so long as all passengers in the vehicle are over 18 years of age and the speed limit of the roadway is 55 miles per hour or below.

Owners of Jeep Wranglers and similar vehicles should be able to enjoy the benefits and freedom of driving their vehicle as designed if they do so responsibly. Please join me in granting these drivers more autonomy by signing on to this proposal.

Introduced as HB1533
