Subject: | Firearm Restraining Orders |
On February 14, 2018, Nikolas Cruz entered Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School with an assault rifle, killing 17 people and injuring 17 more. Despite being the subject of dozens of 911 calls and at least two tips to the FBI, and being accused by neighbors of torturing and killing animals, he was legally able to purchase the deadly weapon with which he took away 17 innocent lives. We cannot let this continue. To address this issue, my bill would permit law enforcement officers, family and household members, and certain health professionals to petition the court for a firearm restraining order if an individual is determined to be dangerous to themselves or others. This would prevent them from purchasing or possessing a firearm or ammunition, but still allow due process to ensure that no responsible firearm owner will lose their right to bear arms. Standing by and watching is no longer an option. For the safety of our constituents and their loved ones, we must work to pass sensible firearm laws, such as this one. Please join me in doing what is right – working to protect the people of Pennsylvania. |
