Subject: | Expansion of Emergency Vehicle Designation |
In the near future, I will introduce legislation to allow a privately owned vehicle used in response to an emergency call by a third member of the fire police in a municipality that does not have its own police department, to be equipped with red revolving and flashing lights with an audible system. These vehicles would be afforded privileges when responding to an emergency including proceeding past a red signal indication or stop sign after slowing down as may be necessary for safe operation and exceeding the maximum speed limits so long as the driver does not endanger life or property. Under current law, only a captain and lieutenant of the fire police who have a privately owned vehicle are currently included among the list of authorized emergency vehicles. A change in the law through this legislation will result in a more rapid response during an emergency. Please join me in sponsoring this important legislation.
