|Subject:||Co-Sponsorship: Resolution that recognizes the Month of April 2017 as “Fair Housing Month” in Pennsylvania|
|In the coming days, I will be introducing a Resolution that recognizes the Month of April 2017 as “Fair Housing Month” in Pennsylvania.
As you may know, the Fair Housing Act instituted Federal enforcement of integration and equal opportunity in housing and has safeguarded progress in fair housing for decades. The United States Department of Housing and Urban Development is currently advancing housing choice and offering homelessness assistance and disaster recovery assistance in communities nationwide. Here at home, the Department of Human Services administers the Homeless Assistance Program in counties throughout our Commonwealth.
On April 28, 2017 the Community College of Philadelphia will host a Fair Housing and Reentry Symposium. This symposium will highlight Federal guidance on the reentry population for professionals in related fields including criminal justice, human services, and real estate. In addition, Federal guidance on applications of the Fair Housing Act and proposed State legislation amending the Landlord Tenant Act of 1951 which prohibits the use of arrest records or criminal background disclosure as a basis for exclusion of housing applicants will likely be addressed. Finally, discussions will also center on fair housing planning to include integrated supportive housing projects for certain target groups including persons with HIV/AIDS, persons with chronic mental illness or persons in recovery from addiction.
With that said, please join me in co-sponsoring this important Resolution. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact my office at (717) 787-3480.
