MEMORANDUM

Posted: October 24, 2016 05:08 PM
From: Representative Donna Bullock
To: All House members
Subject: Resolution Recognizing the 25th Anniversary of the Adoption of 17 Principles of Environmental Justice

In the near future, I plan to introduce a resolution that would recognize the 25th Anniversary of the adoption of 17 Principles of Environmental Justice that were presented to delegates at the First National People of Color Environmental Leadership Summit.

The First National People of Color Environmental Leadership Summit was held on October 24-27, 1991 in Washington D.C., at which time the 17 Principles of Environmental Justices were adopted. The principles have served as the defining document and basis for the grassroots movement for environmental justice.

Gathered together at the summit, delegates established a national and international movement on behalf of all people of color to fight the destruction of lands and communities and to re-establish their spiritual interdependence to the sacredness of Mother Earth. In addition, the delegates strove to create a level of respect for differing cultures, languages, and beliefs about the natural world and their role in healing themselves, ensuring environmental justice, and to promote economic alternatives that would contribute to the development of environmentally safe livelihoods. The adoption of the 17 Principles of Environmental Justice was also a step toward securing the political, economic, and cultural liberation for all people of color that had been denied for over 500 years of colonization and oppression.

I hope you will join me in sponsoring this resolution.
