Subject: Resolution Recognizing Gold Star Mother’s Day, September 25, 2016

In the near future, I plan to introduce a resolution recognizing September 25, 2016 as “Gold Star Mother’s Day” in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. The resolution is inspired by the Pennsylvania Chapter of the Gold Star Mother’s Association, an organization dedicated to honoring the mothers of soldiers who have fallen in service to our country.

Soldiers are trained to move, shoot and communicate. In some ways, the families that are left behind have a more difficult job psychologically. They are required to wait, pray and worry about whether or not their loved ones will return safely from services overseas, some of whom are constantly in harm’s way. That’s a tough job.

Any soldier, sailor, airman or marine will tell you that their primary focus is on their daily mission and defeating the enemy. The serviceman’s family does not have share that situation. Their enemy is time and not being able to know what is happening to their loved one on a day-to-day basis. Many shun the television and news reports because in this modern era of 24-hour news cycles, every bombing and every attack is broadcast, leaving the family to wonder, was their loved one involved or near that event?

That’s why my resolution calls for us to pause, for a day, to honor the military families that are left stateside as well as the families who have made the ultimate sacrifice. I ask that you please join me in co-sponsoring this important legislation.
