Subject: Establishing Promote Literacy Month
 
In the near future, I will introduce a resolution to designate September 2016 as Promote Literacy Month in Pennsylvania.

As a reminder of the importance of this issue, let me quote portions of the resolution:

In our society, literacy now extends beyond the skills of reading, writing, speaking and listening to encompass broader proficiencies including visual, media, financial and information literacy…problems associated with illiteracy can be prevented through education that prepares and molds students to be literate citizens who can contribute to the community…the essential function of literacy is to make it possible for an individual to engage as fully as possible with knowledge and cultural awareness in society and to be a catalyst for change and improvement of society.

Please join me in highlighting the indispensable role of literacy in the allowing every individual to reach and fulfill the highest levels of their God-given potential!
