Subject: | Safe Schools Legislation |
In the near future, I plan to introduce legislation that would require the Governor’s Office of Homeland Security to create an emergency response system within our schools. Modeled after Indiana’s Senate Bill 147, this legislation would require systems designed to improve technology and infrastructure on school property to help schools and local authorities better prevent, prepare for, and respond to manmade or natural disasters. Currently, our local law enforcement agencies are unable to respond to threats such as active shooter situations until they are notified by someone within the building. By creating a system with the Office of Homeland Security, and having local law enforcement work in cooperation with schools in their area, a system can be put in place to give actionable information to law enforcement in a timely manner to ensure the safety of all of our students. This bill will allow for greater safety for children in our schools and peace of mind for their parents and guardians. Please join me in co-sponsoring this important legislation. |
