Subject: | Resolution designating the Month of June 2016 as “Adopt a Cat Month” in Pennsylvania |
In the near future, I plan to introduce a Resolution designating the Month of June 2016 as “Adopt a Cat Month” in Pennsylvania. The American Humane Association and other organizations devoted to animal welfare acknowledge that thousands of newborn kittens join the millions of cats in animal shelters nationwide each spring. Of the estimated 3.4 million cats entering animal shelters each year, only 1.3 million are adopted. Shelters, animal control facilities, animal rescue organizations, veterinarians, donors and potential adopters all have a stake in finding good homes for these animals. There is an estimated 42.9 million homes in the United States that have at least one cat. However, this is not enough, and as a result of overcrowding, 1.4 million are kittens and cats euthanized each year. With the help of this Commonwealth, we need to work together to reduce this number. Therefore, to assist organizations in finding homes for the millions a kittens and cats nationwide, I have decided to introduce this Resolution.
