Subject: | RESOLUTION Condemning the use of Performance-Enhancing Drugs by Athletes |
In the near future I plan to introduce a resolution condemning the use of performance–enhancing drugs “commonly referred to as doping” by athletes, and rebuking any organization that knowingly allows or encourages athletes to use performance-enhancing drugs and urging all high school and college coaches and athletic directors in this Commonwealth to educate themselves and their athletes about the dangers of performance-enhancing drugs. The use of performance-enhancing drugs, including anabolic steroids, androstenedione, human growth hormone, erythropoietin, diuretics and stimulants poses serious health risks, such as the increased chance of suffering a heart attack, stroke, developing liver and other cancers to name but a few. Knowingly allowing or encouraging athletes to use performance-enhancing drugs not only jeopardizes their lives, but also the lives of young aspiring athletes who may be unaware of the risks of using performance-enhancing drugs and oftentimes are influenced by the conduct of the athletes they hope to emulate. I hope you will join me in cosponsoring this important resolution. |
