Subject: | Co-Sponsorship: Designating March 2016 as “Irish American Heritage Month” |
With the celebration of St. Patrick’s Day approaching, I plan to introduce legislation designating March 2016 as “Irish American Heritage Month” in Pennsylvania. Since the founding of this nation, American citizens of Irish descent have been responsible for numerous irreplaceable contributions in both Pennsylvania and the United States. Historically, soldiers who were born in Ireland or of Irish decent fought under General George Washington in the Continental Army and in every major conflict the United States has fought. These contributions continue today across a range of fields; including academia, business, literature, science and politics. In recognition of Irish Americans and their contributions, the Commonwealth hosts some of the oldest and largest St. Patrick’s Day parades in the country. From Philadelphia, where the parade has taken place since 1771, to Scranton, host of the second largest St. Patrick’s Day parade in the nation. Pennsylvanians, regardless of their ethnicity, proudly join in celebration of St. Patrick’s Day each March 17th. I hope you will join me in recognizing the many contributions made by Irish Americans in this Commonwealth and beyond. |
